- Plato, Republic

Philosophers, like most defined identities, are suspect to peculiar characteristics and shortcomings. Perhaps one of the more severe tendencies of the “thinkers” is to take themselves a little (far?) too seriously. Sometimes this is merely annoying, but occasionally an absurd profundity comes to the fore with a premise so ridiculous that shocked laughter can be the only response.

Heh heh. Sounds like a few modern philosophers I know. What in the world was Plato talking about?

Plato was discussing the Education of his Republic. One of the critical things was that the nature and image of gods and heros remain untarnished. Plato argued that stories casting heros/gods in a negative or immoral light should be suppressed and banned (“or if it must be told…”)
