A few things…

Last night I had a couple of guys over for dinner and a jam session; we’re trying to bring together some sort of band for the Grove. I’m moderately excited. Both guys are extremely cool, and I look forward to getting to know them better—as friends, and as musicians.

The recent birth of the Grove (and its immediate successful critical mass) along with different philosophical/theological considerations have had me thinking a lot about the role of music in the church. I think my thinking is this regard has definitely evolved; indeed, my views may perhaps be surprising considering the intrinsic part music has in my identity. You can be looking for a more indepth blog on this idea soon.

On a different note, here are three bands that you should definitely check out: The Twilight Singers, The Killers, and Kasabian.

  1. The Grove? Is there a recent post about this? I’m curious.

  2. There has been no post regarding the Grove. I’m not sure if I’m planning on devoting a whole post to its identity, but I can comment at length on it here. (though not at the moment)…

I’m excited and perhaps slightly ambivalent about it, thought not as much as before. Hope its esoteric stature isn’t a turn-off (I just need to finish writing a paper right now).

Well, I finished my paper. Whenever you finish yours…the suspense is killing me.

  4. Ariel, the Grove is the name given to the new young adult ministry of Heritage. It is comprised of a critical mass of college-aged, singles and young marrieds. We’ve only had 3 or 4 gatherings, but probably close to a hundred people have attended each time.

The ministry is still in its formational stage and I’m fairly excited about its potential. I really think that Mike Borst (the pastor) and I share a similar vision. I’m encouraged that he is against tendencies towards developing a “social ministry,” or “outreach minded seeker” ministry. I am personally very antagonistic towards such focuses and believe that they can be inherrently self-destructive and mostly non-productive. It will definitely be interesting to see how things continue to evolve and to what extent I choose to involve myself.

As of now I’m helping initially with pulling a band together; and music, as those in the “know” are aware, can be frustrating. Perhaps you’ve noticed my latest poem…
