March Madness
March is a great month; usually it is full of unpredictable weather (it went from 76 degrees to 34 within a matter of hours the other day), but the ever-growing hints of spring prove exhilarating. March is also the month of several great events; you’ve got the Ides of March (Mark Anthony murders Julius Caesar), my birthday and Saint Patrick’s Day.
Of course the most important event is March Madness. There’s nothing more exciting than the incredible energy generated by 64 teams battling it out for an epic prize, especially when my KU Jayhawks are among the best and stand a pretty solid chance of taking home the trophy. Even if they don’t win I’ve already gotten sweet satisfaction from Duke’s loss to a superior VCU team; allow me to bask in some petty arrogance for a moment—I picked that upset. It was incredibly gratifying to see all the privileged rich white boys walk off the court in shame, while the VCU boys couldn’t contain their excitement at knocking off such a legendary team. I know it’s petty, but I love seeing Coach K. scowl, I like to see him wallow in defeat.
Here’s to March, St. Patrick and the KU Jayhawks. Voila!

You’re right, it was cool to see Duke lose. I should point out that there were also some privileged black boys walking off the court… (Ever since Derek Webb “repented” of his “wife, kids,” and “safe, white” life (I See Things Upside Down), I’ve been a little cagey about white-smack.
Anyway, enjoy the madness! You have a braket up anywhere? (I think one of mine is displayed on facebook for public ridicule.)

I’ve appended my bracket to the end of the post for the world’s enjoyment (and potential derision). Derek Webb makes me cagey too. I’ve edited the post to be inclusive of all privileged Duke losers…
