KU Believes

Have you ever noticed that new Christians have an earnest confidence in their faith that has the capacity to reach others for Christ in powerful way? A lot of the time, a fresh believer shares the Gospel more often and more effectively than those who have been Christians for decades. I think this same concept is what is propelling the KU Jayhawks towards a likely national championship. This ought to be considered my meager contribution to the important field of Basketball and Theology. The Jayhawks are fresh-faced hoopsters with a supernatural-like aura around their play. Brandon Rush is a sophomore, and in yesterday’s thumping of Kentucky he shot an audacious 6 of 7 from the three point line. Some of those threes were launched from closer to the half...

March Madness

March is a great month; usually it is full of unpredictable weather (it went from 76 degrees to 34 within a matter of hours the other day), but the ever-growing hints of spring prove exhilarating. March is also the month of several great events; you’ve got the Ides of March (Mark Anthony murders Julius Caesar), my birthday and Saint Patrick’s Day. Of course the most important event is March Madness. There’s nothing more exciting than the incredible energy generated by 64 teams battling it out for an epic prize, especially when my KU Jayhawks are among the best and stand a pretty solid chance of taking home the trophy. Even if they don’t win I’ve already gotten sweet satisfaction from Duke’s loss to a superior VCU team; allow me...

General: Immorality not Allowed in Armed Forces

Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined today to apologize for saying that he believes homosexuality is “immoral” and that he therefore supports the ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military. I’m not going to criticize his belief; rather I’m going to criticize his logic. It doesn’t matter what you believe about homosexuality, the key to Gen. Pace’s statement is that being “immoral” presents grounds for being banned from the military. This case to me isn’t about homosexuality at all, which is probably one of the...

300

I can’t wait to go see 300. Every preview I’ve seen makes me shiver with anticipation; only a 30 second glimpse is enough to grab my full attention: brilliant other-worldly colors and movement, the epically pervasive grandiose desire for glory that inspires men to do impossible things and of course the movie’s setting in Greek classical legend. I’ve been reading reviews on the movie out of curiosity, and the reactions it is getting are interesting to examine. Some gush over the undeniable aesthetic majesty of the film, but seem unsure about how such remarkable beauty should be viewed when inseparably mingled with incredible violence: “What is most disturbing about the violence here is how awfully pretty it is – so pretty that...
