For the Coffee Loving Elite
Do you have $20,000 and an insatiable desire to have the best cup of coffee in universe? James Freeman did. Check out this article from the NYT on premier coffee makers: WITH its brass-trimmed halogen heating elements, glass globes and bamboo paddles, the new contraption that is to begin making coffee this week at the Blue Bottle Café here looks like a machine from a Jules Verne novel, a 19th-century vision of the future. Called a siphon bar, it was imported from Japan at a total cost of more than $20,000. The cafe has the only halogen-powered model in the United States, and getting it here required years of elliptical discussions with its importer, Jay Egami of the Ueshima Coffee Company. “If you just want equipment you’re not ready,” Mr. Egami said in...
Up to the Mountains
I can smell dinner; it’s almost ready–the garlic is pungent, and the spicy red pepper makes my nose tingle. This day marks 3 weeks of us living in Colorado, and the time that has passed is full. I know an update is long over due, but if you saw what I see out my window you’d probably lock your computer away and head for the hills as fast as you could. We’ve really been blessed so far, I got a job on our second day here! I’m working as a Community Content Manager for an internet start-up company called Disaboom, Inc (disaboom.com). It’s exciting to be working for such a young company and I’ve been learning a lot and contributing as much as I can. I think this is definitely a big step forward for me careerwise, so...
Personal News
It’s time for some big news from the Poindexters; our five year plan has come to fruition sooner than we expected, but we’re NOT pregnant–it’s something else that is big and life-changing. Britt and I have decided to move to Denver, Colorado in mid August, specifically the week of August 13th. We’ve been thinking about this for a while, but finally decided to consider it very seriously and after some deliberation and prayer made the decision to go. We’re going in August because we’d like to establish residency so Tim can apply and, Lord willing, enroll in graduate school at the University of Colorado at Boulder in August of 2008. Long term Colorado was where we wanted to end up. Upon consideration we realized that it is...
Imported Brews
Two favorite things of mine are superb fiction (and its defense, consumption and propagation) and good sophisticated beer (again: its defense, consumption and propagation). Take a few minutes out of your day to go read excellent posts on both subjects: On Beer and Redemption You see, I was about 23 years old, and up until that point in my life I had only been exposed to darkness, or should I say lightness. I guess in a metaphorical sense it was darkness, but in actual reality it was lightness. I am talking really light, like 4% ABV light. You know, Bud Light, Miller Light, Smirnoff fruity drinks. When I met with Dan that day, he told me that those beers were just a facade, a glimpse of what real beer could be like. I had my doubts, but finally I gave in and...
An Interview
R. Sherman of Musings from the Hinterland recently responded to several querries from a fellow blogger–it was a self-hosted interview of sorts. The idea is to spread to the interview process along, so in that spirit R. Sherman asked for volunteers to be interviewed. I was interested at once and was graciously accepted. Below are my answers to R.’s carefully crafted questions (BTW: do check our R.’s site, I’ve enjoyed it alot recently). 1. Cubs or White Sox? I’ve been to Sox stadium, but never to Wrigley field. All of my friends have always been Cubs fans, but I’ve always been an American League man. I know the Cubs are more fashionable, but I’m going to go with the White Sox. 2. Must Art always have a...
